Waxing in Phnom Penh: Does It Hurt, How Long It Lasts & How to Prepare

If you’re thinking about booking your first wax in Phnom Penh, you probably have two questions running through your head before anything else: is it going to hurt, and how long will it actually last? Those two worries stop more people from trying waxing than anything else — usually because the internet is full of dramatic answers and very little honesty.

This guide is the honest version. We wax guests every single day, women and men, first-timers and regulars, and we’re going to walk you through exactly what to expect: whether it hurts and how much, how long your results will last, how to prepare so it goes smoothly, how to care for your skin afterward, and what waxing actually costs here. By the end you’ll know whether it’s right for you and how to make your first appointment as comfortable as possible.

Quick answers before your first wax

  • Waxing can be uncomfortable, especially the first time, but it shouldn’t be unbearable — most first-timers tell us the anticipation was worse than the wax itself.

  • Results last around 3–6 weeks depending on the area, and with regular waxing your hair grows back finer and softer over time.

  • Arrive with hair about 5–10 mm long (a grain of rice), don’t shave for 2–3 weeks beforehand, and go easy on caffeine right before your appointment.

  • Afterward, avoid heat, swimming, and tight clothing for 24–48 hours, then start gentle exfoliation after 2–3 days to prevent ingrown hairs.

  • We wax both women and men with warm honey wax in private rooms, using fresh supplies for every guest.

What’s in this guide

Does waxing hurt?

Let’s be honest instead of sugar-coating it: yes, waxing can be uncomfortable, especially if it’s your first time — but it shouldn’t be unbearable. The sensation is a quick sting as the hair is removed, and then it’s over. Most people are surprised by how brief it actually is.

The single biggest factor in how much it hurts isn’t your pain tolerance — it’s the therapist. An experienced one works quickly, uses the right technique for each area, and checks in with you throughout to make sure the pace and pressure feel okay. Rushed, untrained waxing is what gives the treatment its scary reputation; careful, skilled waxing is a completely different experience.

It also helps to know that not all areas feel the same. Coarser hair and more sensitive skin mean some spots sting more than others. As a rough guide, the bikini area and underarms tend to be the most sensitive because the hair is coarse and the skin is thin, while areas like the arms, legs, and eyebrows are generally very manageable. If you’re nervous, starting with a less sensitive area like eyebrows or underarms is a gentle way to learn what waxing feels like before committing to more.

Here’s the encouraging part, and it’s true for almost everyone: it gets easier. Waxing tends to hurt less the more regularly you do it. Over time the hair grows back finer, the follicles loosen, and your skin gets used to the process — so your second and third appointments are noticeably more comfortable than your first.

There’s plenty you can do to tip the odds in your favor, too. Arrive with your hair at the ideal length, keep the skin clean, and avoid caffeine right before your appointment — it can make some people more sensitive. If you’re particularly anxious, a standard over-the-counter pain reliever taken about 30 minutes beforehand can take the edge off. And try to avoid booking during the few days before your period, when skin is often at its most sensitive.

But the most reassuring thing we can tell you is the thing nearly every first-time guest says as they leave: the anticipation was worse than the waxing itself. The fear builds it into something far bigger than the few seconds of actual discomfort.

How long does waxing last?

This is where waxing genuinely wins, and it’s why people switch to it. For most guests, results last 3–6 weeks, depending on the area, your rate of hair growth, and your individual hair cycle.

The reason it lasts so much longer than shaving comes down to where the hair is removed.

Shaving cuts the hair off at the surface of the skin, so regrowth appears within a day or two — often as stubble. Waxing removes the entire hair from the root, so there’s nothing at the surface and no stubble; you get smooth skin for weeks, not hours. Because everyone’s hairs are on slightly different points in their natural growth cycle, regrowth also comes in gradually and unevenly rather than all at once, which is why the smooth period stretches out for weeks.

As a general guide for rebooking:

  • Underarms: every 3–4 weeks

  • Bikini or Brazilian: every 4–6 weeks

  • Legs: every 4–6 weeks

Most people settle into a rhythm of every 4–5 weeks to keep results looking their best. Consistency matters more than people expect. When you wax on a regular schedule, you’re repeatedly removing hair during its active growth phase, which weakens the follicle over time. The payoff is real: many of our regular guests notice their hair growing back finer, softer, and sparser the longer they stick with it — which in turn makes each appointment more comfortable and the results last a little longer.

Waxing vs shaving vs threading

If you’re weighing your options, here’s an honest comparison of the three most common methods.

Waxing removes hair from the root, so results last three to six weeks, regrowth is soft rather than stubbly, and over time hair often grows back finer. The trade-offs are that you need a little length to wax (you can’t do it every few days), and there’s brief discomfort during the treatment.

Shaving is cheap, fast, and painless in the moment, but it only cuts hair at the surface. Regrowth appears within a day or two as stubble, it can cause razor bumps and nicks, and it does nothing to reduce hair over time. It’s convenient for touch-ups but high-maintenance if you want consistently smooth skin.

Threading is excellent for precise facial work — especially eyebrows and upper lip — because it removes fine hairs cleanly and shapes with great control. For larger areas, though, it isn’t practical, which is why waxing is the more common choice for arms, legs, underarms, and bikini.

For most body areas, waxing offers the best balance of long-lasting smoothness and gradually reduced regrowth. Many guests use a combination — threading for delicate brow shaping, waxing for everything else.

If you're weighing longer-term options too, here's how laser hair removal compares.

How to prepare for your wax

Good preparation makes a real difference to both comfort and results. Here’s what to do before you come in, and why each step matters:

  • Get the hair length right. Aim for about 5–10 mm — roughly the length of a grain of rice. This is the most important one. Too short and the wax can’t grip the hair properly, leading to patchy results; too long and removal is more uncomfortable than it needs to be.

  • Don’t shave for at least 2–3 weeks beforehand. The hair needs to grow out fully so it can be removed cleanly from the root. Shaving between waxes resets the cycle and works against you.

  • Skip heavy exfoliation and retinol products on the area for 24 hours before. These can leave the skin more sensitive and prone to irritation during the wax.

  • Arrive with clean, dry skin. No lotions, oils, or heavy moisturizer on the area, as they can interfere with how the wax adheres.

  • Go easy on caffeine right before. It can heighten skin sensitivity for some people, making the treatment feel sharper than it needs to.

  • A tip on timing: if you’re waxing for a specific event or trip, book it two to three days ahead rather than the same day. That gives any temporary redness time to settle and your skin time to look its best.

Aftercare: the first 48 hours

Your skin is more vulnerable right after waxing — the follicles are open and the surface is slightly sensitized — so a little care in the first couple of days protects your results and prevents problems.

For the first 24–48 hours, avoid hot showers, saunas, swimming pools, intense exercise, and tight clothing. The common thread here is heat, friction, and sweat, which are exactly what irritate freshly waxed skin and can lead to redness or breakouts. Loose, breathable clothing is your friend for the first day.

Beyond that window, keep the area clean and moisturized to support recovery. Then, after 2–3 days, begin gentle exfoliation — and this is the single most effective thing you can do to prevent ingrown hairs. Light, regular exfoliation keeps the skin’s surface clear so new hairs can grow out unobstructed instead of curling back under the skin. A soft washcloth or a mild exfoliating product a few times a week is enough.

It’s also worth knowing what’s normal and what isn’t. Some redness and a few small bumps in the first hours are completely normal and settle quickly. Persistent irritation, on the other hand, usually traces back to heat, friction, or skipping aftercare — which is exactly why these simple steps matter. Follow them and your skin recovers comfortably while your results stay looking their best for longer.

Not sure where to start? If it’s your first time, the eyebrows or underarms are a gentle, quick introduction. A bikini wax tidies the bikini line and the area just outside it, while a fuller intimate wax removes more — if you’re unsure which suits you, just ask when you book and we’ll guide you. Larger areas like full legs or full body deliver the most dramatic smooth-skin payoff and are popular before trips and events.

What makes waxing at Cholsa different

If you’re nervous, the two things that matter most are hygiene and comfort — and that’s exactly where we focus. Every treatment is done in a private room, so you’re never exposed or rushed, using warm honey wax applied carefully by trained therapists. Honey wax is gentle on the skin, which makes it a good choice for sensitive areas and first-timers.

Just as importantly, we maintain strict hygiene practices, with clean equipment and fresh supplies for every single guest — so you never have to wonder what touched your skin. From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, the goal is a calm, professional experience where you feel looked after rather than processed.

Who should be cautious with waxing

Waxing suits the vast majority of people, but there are a few situations where you should check first or take extra care. If you use retinoids or strong acids on the area, or you’re on prescription acne medication such as isotretinoin, waxing can be too harsh on the skin — these thin the skin and can cause it to lift during waxing. Very sensitive skin, sunburn, cuts, or active skin conditions in the area are also reasons to wait or seek advice.

If any of this applies to you, it doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t be waxed — just let us know when you book so we can advise the safest approach, or recommend holding off until the skin is ready. When in doubt, a quick word with your doctor or your therapist beforehand saves discomfort later.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to book ahead, or can I walk in?

Because our therapists have limited availability, we recommend booking in advance by phone or chat to secure your preferred time. Walk-ins may be accepted if a therapist is free, but an appointment is always the safer option.

Can men get waxed?

Absolutely. We provide professional waxing for both women and men, in private treatment rooms.

Will you judge me?

Never. Our therapists are here to help you feel comfortable, confident, and well cared for. We admire guests who invest in their self-care, and we’ve seen every hair type and skin type imaginable.

Can I get waxed during my period?

Yes, if you’re comfortable — though some people find they’re a little more sensitive during that time, so it’s worth keeping in mind when you schedule.

Does waxing hurt less over time?

For most people, yes. As the hair grows back finer and your skin gets used to the process, appointments become noticeably more comfortable the longer you keep them up.

How long does an appointment take?

Most facial areas take 10–20 minutes, while larger areas or intimate waxing typically take 30–60 minutes.

How soon will I see hair grow back?

Most guests enjoy smooth skin for around 3–6 weeks before regrowth becomes noticeable, depending on the area and your hair cycle.
